"Lupine Legato" - Oil - 24" x 30" - SOLD
”While the snow still tops the mountains in spring, lupine springs from seemingly barren soil. Its successful survival seems to coax the later spring heralds along. This day was one where the light was soft and cool and did not portend at all the hot months to come." -- SFG

"Trail by the Vineyard" - Oil - 24" x 24" - SOLD
”In the hills near Los Olivos, California, are many vineyards laid over the hills like a green striped blanket. This view was framed by lovely, white-barked trees and was approached by a quiet country road." -- SFG

"Slender Testaments" - Oil - 24" x 24" - $700
”Not only do these characteristic conifers demonstrate nature's will to survive, they are a testament to its immensely rich variety of shapes and forms. This scene is on the California coast, not far from Mendocino." -- SFG

"As the Water Flows" - Oil - 24" x 30" - $750
”Sometimes I run out of ideas for titles. For some reason the name of the soap opera, 'As the World Turns' popped into my head when I was ready to label the image, so I adapted it a little. This beautiful scene is in nearby Lassen National Park in Northern California." -- SFG

"When Nature Sings" - Oil - 24" x 30" - $750
”In spite of being a plein air painter, I look forward to December when I spend more time in my studio. For the entire month, I listen to Christmas music in all its majesty and paint with a full heart. It was a true feeling of joy that inspired this work. I hope your screen shows the subtle color harmonies that characterize it." -- SFG

"Below Monterey" - Oil - 24" x 30" - SOLD
”Light effects on the California coast intrigue me. Here I've caught a unique day and time. Some say no two days and their atmospheric conditions are ever duplicated and those conditions vary hour to hour. I agree!" -- SFG

"Sierra Drama" - Oil - 24" x 30" - NFS (yet)
"Sometimes images are stored in my mind and surface years later as a work develops. This sundown in Lassen National Park was one. The warm tones of the trees were against the mountains whose usual purple tone was washed by the strong reds of the evening light and became a magenta instead. This work is packed with color and emotion." --- SFG

"Aspen Autumn" - Oil - 24" x 30" - SOLD
Dispite its unfortunate name, Convict Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Sierra Nevada mountains near Bishop, California. I've painted it many times. When the aspen spread a brilliant yellow across the hills, the scene is even more inspiring than usual.

"California Hospitality" - Oil - 24" x 24" - SOLD
This Bed and Breakfast in Ferndale, California, shines in its Victorian splendor. The blooming hydrangeas added color to the inviting scene. Ferndale, just south of Eureka on the California coast is a diary farming community, but its main street is worth a stroll. Don't miss the ironworks specialty shop and its furniture store next door.

"A Little Lupine" - Oil - 16" x 20" - EXHIBITION PAINTING - $1600
With spring colors saturating this field, I could not resist putting in a few of California's lupine that bathe the hills at that time. This studio work was a delight to paint, since it's one of my favorite subjects. The color of the background mountains turns pastel in the unique light of the area.

"Pacific Duet" - Oil - 24" x 30" - SOLD
The coast of California is picturesque and breathtaking at the same time. Similar in climate to the Amalfi Coast in Italy, the light is equally rare. Both have unique vistas and characteristic vegitation. This scene includes graceful tree forms, layered bluffs that reach into the ocean, and a surge of coral light that sets the mood.

"Hour of Purple Shadows" - Oil - 16" x 20" - SOLD
There are two times of day that the light is best for painting, early morning and late evening. If you've watched my work, you may have deducted that I am no longer a morning person. Fortunately, I love the late sun and the colors it produces. This scene is just north of Los Olivos, California.

"Sierra Brilliance" - Oil - 24" x 24" - $650
The aspens at Convict Lake in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California are an unforgettable sight. Here, I've used the color and light/dark contrast to create a strong statement.

"Some Days Are Diamonds" - Oil - 24" x 30" - $1500
John Denver is one of my favorite songwriters and as this marvelous scene developed before my eyes, I remembered his lines, "Some days are diamonds. Some days are stone." The reference is to both the stunning beauty of the Pacific and to the fact that the painting went very well. Both are gifts.

"California Autumn Medley" - Oil - 30" x 24" - SOLD
With foreground cottonwoods steeped in rich autumn colors, the coastal atmosphere veils distant mountains in soft light. This part of the autumn color season is brief and a delay or heavy wind can render an artist's subject a denuded skeleton.

"Santa Ynez Tree Line" - Oil - 12" x 16" - SOLD
This was the last painting of my terrific southwest trip. The pattern of the trees and their rich color were worth the effort of standing in the wind and holding the easel down. The next morning, we heard about the San Diego county fires as we drove north toward home. It's sad to think about how that landscape has changed.

"Afternoon at Arches" - Oil - 11" x 14" - $225
I carefully timed my painting session for this wonderful light as the evening sun lit the formations at Arches National Park near Moab, Utah. The wind wasn't as fierce as yesterday, but I still took shelter beside the car.

"New Snow Soon" - Oil - 24" x 30" - SOLD
"Autumn is coming early this year. At least where I am. The days are a bit chilled and the trees and grasses are beginning to turn. This scene of the mighty Sierra Madre Mountains near Bishop, California, testifies to the brilliance promised." SFG

"Headwaters of the Salmon" - Oil - 11" x 14" - $225
Our family spent a spectacular weekend in the Trinity Wilderness Area in northern California. While the others enjoyed hiking to a view that was like the top of the world and fishing in remote Josephine Lake, I caught this quiet view of the Salmon River. Despite its low flow, as it always is in September, the water reflected the colors surrounding it and soft willows contrasted with granite bolders.

"California Slope with Lupine" - Oil - 24" x 30" - SOLD
"For those who asked for larger landscapes, here's another one. I was inspired by John Gamble's wonderful scenes that set the standard for the Early California Impressionists. His lupine paintings, along with those of Granville Redmond, are unsurpassed, but I'm very pleased with this one of mine." -- SG

"On the Edge, Mendocino" - Oil - 24" x 24" - SOLD
"This wild explosion of color was the expression of joy! The wonderful sunlit scene is on the coast of California near Mendocino. The color flew onto the canvas (and all over me) with forceful, loaded brush strokes that build on the contrasts and angles in the work. I am very pleased with the result." -- SG

"Dairy Farm Near Ferndale" - Oil - 12" x 16" - $260
Sitting below my vantage point, these barns and the buildings beyond them offered pattern and color in the lush pastureland near Ferndale, on the coast in northern California. The colors and direction of the clouds added to the composition admirably.

"Autumn Glow, Bishop, California" - Oil - 20" x 24" - SOLD
Every once in a while, I start a painting and it goes so well - start to finish - that I really don't clearly remember painting it. It's as if some other force, a greater hand, takes over and guides my inept digits. I'm not alone in this conviction, I know, since other artists have documented the experience, as well. In my mind, this lifts art from its mean environment to a glorious, spiritual level and I feel I have a small part in God's work.

"Flowers from Heather" - Oil - 14" x 11" - SOLD
Almost yearly, I paint a portrait of flowers sent by my children on Mother's Day. They always know I'll love that rememberance. For this bouquet, I set it in cool light beside my studio window and I think the resulting harmony is successful. Thanks, Heather!

"Sunset Mirror" - Oil - 24" x 20" - Exhibition Painting - $2400
Try as I might, I could not make this image show this painting as it really is. The color combination is unusual and harmonious, not garish. Dashes of color make this work lively and rewarding. It's one that went right from the first to last stroke... something that happens only rarely for any artist!

"Forgotten" - Oil - 20" x 16" - $325
I had just completed a large commissioned painting of a floral subject when we left for a few days. When I returned, the bouquet was shriveled, but had a different kind of harmony that appealed to me. Softer in color than my computer monitor shows, the painting has a slightly somber mood, more restful than sad.

"Spring Farm" - Oil - 11" x 14" - $225
When we visited our son in Oregon City, Oregon, earlier this spring, I found this great barn and accompanying silo and sheds. The early leaves caught the clear light and created a shimmer. I painted as my son and husband worked on the airplane my son is building at Linhart's airfield, a friendly place that takes you back to a better time.

"River Color" - Oil - 11" x 14" - $225
"It's a good feeling to "rescue" a painting. I found this one in my wet painting storage box, long forgotten after an autumn afternoon of painting on location. It didn't really please me, but I saw a few areas that had promise. With color adjustments and calligraphy, the scene improved rapidly. I added accents in strategic places and it evolved into a nice piece." -- SG

"Laguna Park Foliage" - Oil - 11" x 14" - SOLD
"In Laguna Beach, a breathtakingly beautiful park stretches along the coastline. It is used by all, walking, jogging, giving their dogs an outing, meeting friends, or even painting. The landscaping is in keeping with the semi-tropical setting and has wonderful texture and color.
I painted this a week after the San Luis Obispo Plein Air Painting Festival, using a stamped-but-not-used canvas." - SG
