"Lupine Legato"

"Lupine Legato" - Oil - 24" x 30" - SOLD

”While the snow still tops the mountains in spring, lupine springs from seemingly barren soil. Its successful survival seems to coax the later spring heralds along. This day was one where the light was soft and cool and did not portend at all the hot months to come." -- SFG

"Sometimes images are stored in my mind and surface years later as a work develops. This sundown in Lassen National Park was one. The warm tones of the trees were against the mountains whose usual purple tone was washed by the strong reds of the evening light and became a magenta instead. This work is packed with color and emotion." --- SFG

"Aspen Autumn" - Oil - 24" x 30" - SOLD

Dispite its unfortunate name, Convict Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Sierra Nevada mountains near Bishop, California. I've painted it many times. When the aspen spread a brilliant yellow across the hills, the scene is even more inspiring than usual.

"California Hospitality"

"California Hospitality" - Oil - 24" x 24" - SOLD

This Bed and Breakfast in Ferndale, California, shines in its Victorian splendor. The blooming hydrangeas added color to the inviting scene. Ferndale, just south of Eureka on the California coast is a diary farming community, but its main street is worth a stroll. Don't miss the ironworks specialty shop and its furniture store next door.

"A Little Lupine"

"A Little Lupine" - Oil - 16" x 20" - EXHIBITION PAINTING - $1600

With spring colors saturating this field, I could not resist putting in a few of California's lupine that bathe the hills at that time. This studio work was a delight to paint, since it's one of my favorite subjects. The color of the background mountains turns pastel in the unique light of the area.

The coast of California is picturesque and breathtaking at the same time. Similar in climate to the Amalfi Coast in Italy, the light is equally rare. Both have unique vistas and characteristic vegitation. This scene includes graceful tree forms, layered bluffs that reach into the ocean, and a surge of coral light that sets the mood.

"Hour of Purple Shadows" - Oil - 16" x 20" - SOLD

There are two times of day that the light is best for painting, early morning and late evening. If you've watched my work, you may have deducted that I am no longer a morning person. Fortunately, I love the late sun and the colors it produces. This scene is just north of Los Olivos, California.

John Denver is one of my favorite songwriters and as this marvelous scene developed before my eyes, I remembered his lines, "Some days are diamonds. Some days are stone." The reference is to both the stunning beauty of the Pacific and to the fact that the painting went very well. Both are gifts.

"California Autumn Medley" - Oil - 30" x 24" - SOLD

With foreground cottonwoods steeped in rich autumn colors, the coastal atmosphere veils distant mountains in soft light. This part of the autumn color season is brief and a delay or heavy wind can render an artist's subject a denuded skeleton.

This was the last painting of my terrific southwest trip. The pattern of the trees and their rich color were worth the effort of standing in the wind and holding the easel down. The next morning, we heard about the San Diego county fires as we drove north toward home. It's sad to think about how that landscape has changed.

"Headwaters of the Salmon" - Oil - 11" x 14" - $225

Our family spent a spectacular weekend in the Trinity Wilderness Area in northern California. While the others enjoyed hiking to a view that was like the top of the world and fishing in remote Josephine Lake, I caught this quiet view of the Salmon River. Despite its low flow, as it always is in September, the water reflected the colors surrounding it and soft willows contrasted with granite bolders.

"Autumn Glow, Bishop, California" - Oil - 20" x 24" - SOLD

Every once in a while, I start a painting and it goes so well - start to finish - that I really don't clearly remember painting it. It's as if some other force, a greater hand, takes over and guides my inept digits. I'm not alone in this conviction, I know, since other artists have documented the experience, as well. In my mind, this lifts art from its mean environment to a glorious, spiritual level and I feel I have a small part in God's work.

"Sunset Mirror"

"Sunset Mirror" - Oil - 24" x 20" - Exhibition Painting - $2400

Try as I might, I could not make this image show this painting as it really is. The color combination is unusual and harmonious, not garish. Dashes of color make this work lively and rewarding. "Forgotten" - Oil - 20" x 16" - $325

I had just completed a large commissioned painting of a floral subject when we left for a few days. When I returned, the bouquet was shriveled, but had a different kind of harmony that appealed to me. Softer in color than my computer monitor shows, the painting has a slightly somber mood, more restful than sad.
